None of those can survive without the other ones.

Armando Pontoja, author of The Future of Wealth, The Next 50 Years of Money, Power in the Age of Intelligence, is on with us today to give us a preview of our future lives and even tell us how crypto has been building a platform for that.

I'm excited to have you on is because we just look at price every day, and it kind of drives me insane, especially for the last 10 months since I got put into doing this show right as the bear market started, just to know a little bit about me.
Now, you're going to kind of give us a way zoomed out view of this, which I think is always very refreshing for us and our audience on the show.
But first, before we start, man, tell us a little bit about you.
You're new to the show.
You are an author and futurist, which I think people really always kind of wonder what that means.
So tell us a little bit about you, man.
Oh, well, so I started out in software engineering years ago.
So I wanted to, you know, I had a bachelor's in software engineering.
So I was still I was doing that, you know, doing, you know, it kind of didn't fulfill me.
So I went back to school and said, you know, what do you want to study?
So I want to study software security.
So and then they said, well, you got to choose a graduate degree program.
And I said, well.
uh what is it what are the specialties and they said well crypt software security and cryptography so i ended up being uh studying cryptography uh in 2009 right uh but i didn't discover bitcoin until a year and a half later i heard some people in school talking about it and i was like what is this so i bought some uh and started trying not but really i saw the potential early in 2011 but i saw the wrong potential i thought it was uh i thought that the potential was integrating it into you know payment systems Because at that point, people saw it as more of a currency.
So I built a business just integrating Bitcoin into websites and payment system, POS systems.
And then Bitcoin crashed.
It got up to $1,000 and it crashed.
And I said, well, it's over.
So I kind of like I went on and I learned a lot from finance, just messing around with crypto.
So I got into stocks.
uh worked for a company who uh algorithmically traded stocks so i worked for them for i learned a lot about stocks a lot about how financial markets work and then around 2015 ethereum came out and i saw it when i when i first saw ethereum i saw how crypto was transformed and i saw a lot of potential so i got back into it i ended up buying a bunch of ethereum early on uh there was a dow hack that happened shortly after that i panicked again got rid of everything and then about a year later i saw ethereum up to 100 and you know i got in at six sold at like 30 40.
then i i forgot about it for a while i came and i was like man something's happening here what's going on Why do I keep giving up to all this?
So this time I got into it in 2016 and I didn't I didn't quit.
But around that time, I created a site called ICO Rancor.
That was back during the ICO craze of 16 and 17.
And it ended up being the third biggest site, crypto site in the world during that period.
We ended up getting acquired.
At that point, I had millions of dollars, so I didn't know what to do, you know, what else am I going to do with my life.
So I started going online talking about what I've learned over the years, and that was stocks, crypto, and technology.
Those are the three things I've spent my life learning.
And I started, you know, talking and people started listening.
And then, you know, I built investment businesses, consulting businesses around that, wrote a couple of books.
And then they just formed into me being a, you know, a futurist because of those three things.
of course you start with a technology background.
I've always been interested in the future since I was a kid, back to the future, the movie, stuff like that.
And I started like saying, well, I can build a career on this, but I need to build a structure.
So I started learning about what futurism was, attending conferences.
I'm actually going to one next month.
And I started building a base on what the study of or the print of the whole industry and study of futurism.
And I started putting my ideas together into a thesis, which I call the Power Trio.

Honestly, I didn't even know you were going to have so much OG cred.

When you bought Bitcoin in 2011, how much was it like three bucks?
Like 100 bucks?
The first purchase, I don't have track records of it because I had to meet a guy at the dog track.
You know, this is how crazy Bitcoin was.
No, it was no place to buy it online.
So there was a guy on Craigslist that sold it.
So I would find this guy and he would get the dog track and he'd be playing poker and I had to give him money and he would give me the Bitcoin, you know, and that's how I got the first one.
But shortly after Coinbase 2000.
I think it was 12 or 13 came out.
I have, I've shown people this all the time in real life.
I have hundreds of transactions, Bitcoin at 20, 30, you know, I think it was 40, $50, $70.
I have one member.
People don't remember this, but Bitcoin Coinbase was built like PayPal.
I have invoices in there where I was paying people for services.
And one guy charged me 1.9 Bitcoin for a logo.
I still have that invoice.
I show people all the time.
I'm like, you know what that is now?
And it was a simple logo, you know, just, you know, just something that he probably made in Microsoft Word.
But at the time, it was like $150.
But now.
It's, you know, that's over as $120,000, you know, but at the time, that's what they don't have that invoicing service on Coinbase anymore because it's changed to an investor.
But early on Coinbase was like, it was like PayPal we've sent and you know, you were dead like snippets where you'd add it into your website.
And it was everything was around payments back then.
So it was a different world.
We didn't see the investment potential, at least most people until years after.
Right.
That's so funny, man.
That's so much like the pizza story, like the 10,000 Bitcoins for pizza.
You have your own pizza story when it comes to spending Bitcoin.
It makes sense that he would do that.
That's why I don't feel bad about the Bitcoins.
I gave away, sold, whatever, because at the time, people did not see it as what it is today.
it was not an investment so you didn't think it was going the most highest price we ever had and it was like a thousand that was it so uh and back then it was he was even earlier before me we didn't see it like we see it now so what we do is we take what we understand about bitcoin now and apply it to 15 years ago and say the guy was stupid he didn't know just like i didn't know was it so was it around that kind of eth launch time that you you were saying you kind of got back into it was that when you realized that bitcoin could be was maybe aiming more towards like a store of value beyond just being like your transaction system yeah so so ethereum when i saw what it was basically a worldwide computer I saw the potential of cryptocurrency and I understood where Bitcoin's place was.
Before Bitcoin was just like floating around.
It didn't have a purpose.
Ethereum almost like gave Bitcoin a purpose because Ethereum was the first crypto ever that had a real use case that I could clearly see.
Remember they had Litecoin and all these other stuff, XRP before.
I didn't like XRP back then, but I ended up liking it later.
But now I saw, well, if Ethereum is this worldwide computer, what is Bitcoin's use case?
I saw it as a store of value at that time.
Yeah, that makes a lot of sense.
So bring us to modern day now, Armando, because you kind of gave us a bit of your pivot personally career-wise, and congrats on selling that site as well.
I'm sure ICOs were quite the rage at the time.
At the time, I didn't know that they were going to fail.
I thought that was the future.
But I mean, looking back, what did I know now when I'm more mature now?
I understood it was going to fail anyway, but I didn't know that back then.
oh it was it was quite the rage uh but let's let's kind of flash forward to modern day uh as you've kind of built your career looking way deeper into the future how do you see when you are giving talks when you're writing books and stuff like that like what's your pitch for for for bitcoin and and i guess maybe other cryptos or crypto as a whole being part of the future economy and this is something too on our show it's like listen we have we have a separate ai show that um has been running this year and has definitely given us FOMO and also some anger for being crypto holders for so long.
But obviously, you're here to kind of help us zoom out as well and tell us a little bit how they converge.
So we have about four big technologies that's going to change everything.
One is quantum computing, AI.
robotics and blockchain.
And people see those four as disconnected.
They're all connected.
It's no, none of those can survive without the other ones.
And they're going to start, you know, showing, you know, their true colors at real times.
You know what I mean?
At different times, right?
Is that first we're going to see AI.
AI is what's happening right now, right?
And you look at AI and you say, well, it's just chat to you.
And that's way bigger than that.
It's a transformation that's happening.
That's why we see energy costs going up.
That's why we see concerns about water usage.
That's why we see communities fighting back about data centers.
This is a transformation, a build out, AI infrastructure build out, sorry, a utility build out more or less, bigger than we've ever seen in history.
And then we have to have quantum computing, which is coming up.
That's going to amplify AI.
That's going to make it.
to where we get into from AGI, which is normal AI that we all know, to AGI, which is general intelligence, which means that most AIs will be able to exceed what an average human can do.
And then we also have robotics.
Now, robotics now is, you know, we don't have the batteries and, you know, we don't have the technology to really mass produce them, but those two things, AI and quantum computing, are going to enable the mass production of robots.
which which thing just like humans.
Right.
And then you got to put in that situation.
We're going to have physical robots.
We're also going to have virtual agents that we already have now, but at a higher level because they have access to more computation.
And what you think about this is that you got robots, right?
Remember, they can outnumber us ten to one.
So instead of having four billion people on Earth, we have, you know, four or 50 billion entities, not humans, but entities.
Now, what are they going to transact in?
We're going to use our fiat currency or are they going to use something that's fast that they can understand as divisible?
They can do small payments and they're going to use crypto.
So all of these technologies that we see today are all interrelated and they're the foundation of the future economy.
So I kind of want to touch on a few points there.
You said that you feel like robotics is going to be a slow build-out, and yet we know that Tesla is like building Optimus.
They've kind of refocused a lot of their efforts away from cars onto that.
Even from what I see in the timeline, it does feel like robotics is something that is kind of definitely like the next thing after the current kind of AI bottleneck trade.
Is that something you're seeing, or is that you think that that's still like pretty deep?
deep and far away.
I would say quantum computing will probably be next.
But the robotics, I think robotics are a little bit farther out.
And it's because of battery.
It's really not about the technology.
It's because of battery technology.
We just don't have the battery.
You have to charge every six, seven hours.
They have to be smaller than human size.
And there's some problems that we still have to get through.
So the early adopters will start using robotics in the next few years.
You'll see them around, but it won't be mass.
adoption for maybe five years, maybe a little bit longer.
And you remember, there's also resistance.
There's things in society itself resist new technologies that are transformational, like robotics.
So that resistance causes the timeline to be a little bit longer than it would have if it was just based purely on technology.
So tell me about quantum.
What do you think that's going to look like?
And do you think it's a threat to Bitcoin, like people have been saying?
I don't think so.
And I'm going to tell you why.
It's because quantum computing, for those who don't know, has the power to to hack any uh most bitcoin wallets especially the older ones uh and the reason why is because uh crypt current cryptography the way that we we secure bank accounts where we secure you know uh communication on wi-fi you know everything is based on a cryptography that their cryptography is that that is only that only uh is basically based on time right is that I can have any encryption we use, they can be hacked, but it takes so long to do so that it's not worth it.
Right.
It takes billions of years to crack it.
If we just had my computer run all day and try every possible combination, it would figure out any cryptography with enough time.
But the time is way past our lifetime because of the speed of the computer.
So the speed of the computer is the limitation.
So quantum computers are billions of times faster.
So instead of taking a billion years, it may take a couple of days.
So now everything that we have, including Bitcoin, but also bank accounts, Wi-Fi communication, all of that can be hacked very quickly.
And now what we use to protect it, which was basically time, does not apply anymore.
So now, you know, a lot of things that we use are at risk.
But what we don't understand about technology is people always say, well, what if this happened today?
It would do this.
But you got to remember, things happen along a timeline, right?
And during the time that an innovation like quantum computing is being built, that has a threat to something in the future, guess what else is being built?
The defenses against it.
So people don't sit around and allow technologies or anything else to just come, you know, to just come and take over everything and ruin everything.
They build defenses against it.
That's like right now, if I took, let's say, a fighter jet and I gave it back to the South in the Civil War, they would win the Civil War, obviously.
Right.
But things don't work like that.
Right.
Is that an amazing visual?
So we have we have fighter jets.
We also have anti fighter missiles.
So that's the reason why now it doesn't have any effect.
But back then it did.
So it's the same thing with quantum computing.
By the time quantum computing gets to a point that it can hack wallets, we will have the defense against it.

Man, that is honestly, I've never heard an analogy like that on the show of comparing.
of this compared to you taking a ticket taking like an f18 to the civil war uh and and fighting one side with it all you need was one a few missiles they would end the war oh man that's uh that's a funny visual man um okay let's actually you know you know you're a futurist and this is something where we don't get these kind of takes in this kind of vision very often so let's let's dig into this and and you can kind of paint some pictures for us Let's start near term.
We talk a lot about these technologies on this show and our AI show as well.
What's something in five years now, short term, that we'll be doing with, let's say with money and with wealth and investing and everything, or it could be anything else, or honestly, Armando, like whatever you think is most interesting, what's something that you think is going to be the most surprising to us?
I think Bitcoin will be in most people's retirement accounts.
i think that uh some ai's not all will already start using crypto to transact i think those two things is what we're going to see in the next five years what about outside wealth is there anything anything else like any come on you got to have some kind of flying car theorem or something like that man like some other kind of freak like the robot's going to be doing my laundry or something uh five years is tight because like i said there's also social attributes that cause It caused technologies not to advance as fast as they could have.
And I'll give you one good example, is that if you go to the airport right now and you look behind the counter, if you look at their software, it's like 20 years old.
And the reason, and there's better software out here, there's faster software, but because the airline spent so much money in building it 20 years ago, they refused to move in, which makes sense, it still works.
So why move something new to slightly faster?
It's not, the benefit's not there.
So we also have resistance of the people to change because they have to learn something new.
And, you know, so these things cause technologies to advance slower than they would have, like if they were just based on.
And I have something in my book called The Shovel Paradox that talks about this.
It talks about like, let's say, for example, you're in your backyard, right?
Let's say you need to dig a hole.
And now if the hole is a small hole, you go into the garage, pull a shovel out, you dig that hole out, right?
So as the hole, as your job gets bigger, let's say you need a hole that's three times as big.
Well, a shovel still works.
Let's say you need it five times as big.
Well, a shovel still works.
Ten times as big, you start thinking, well, maybe I need to go rent a backhoe or extra excavator from Home Depot or something.
But then you say, well, you know, by the time I get over there, figure it all out, rent it out, I could have just done it with the shovel.
But sometimes the hole can get...
to a point to where it actually makes sense time-wise to go rent that machine, but you still use the shovel because of the friction to go get it and change what you know, learn something new.
So that's what causes adoption to be slower is because it's not because the technology is better or worse, it's because people don't wanna go through the friction it takes to adopt a new technology.
And that happens on a social level, on a civilization level as well.
I'd say 10 years from now, we'll have let's say we'd have at least 10 billion entities using crypto.
And not humans, but entities.
We have agents, we'll have human robotics by then.
10 years is enough for we to see at least 30% adoption.
So you'll start, it'll be everyday life for you to see a robot, you know, robots communicating with each other in a language that we may not know.
We'll see, they'll transact between each other.
in uh crypto which will cause first of all the addressable market to go up second of all the uh demand for these cryptos to go up that's one thing that i think most crypto people are missing is that they're not projecting out into the future where the world has changed and uh and market caps don't make now all of a sudden the bitcoin market can be 10 times higher because there's more entities that are using it adopting and holding it man what you your whole thing about the shovel just describes every weekend for me man I put down my headset on Friday afternoons and I transform into Home Depot dad.
And I explore this exact conflict all the time.
Just like, do I need to go rent that thing from the hardware store or call a friend or should I just muscle it out by myself?
Even in my personal life, I'm resistant.
I feel like my professional life, I'm way more into new tech.
But personally, I totally get that, as you're saying.
Let's let's give me even deeper in the future Armando again, your futurist your book literally starts with the next 50 years.
What is something when we are we are old guys or Armando that we will be absolutely blown away by and telling the kids telling the grandkids be like you don't understand what it was like.
I mean, just crypto or everything, whatever you want, man, your futurist.
Give us the big juicy one.
Quantum computing is a change that's big.
It's bigger than a lot of people realize.
They just say there's another type of computer.
Most of society's problems are because either the data set is too large for regular computers to go through it all, or the computation takes so long based on the speed of our computers now.
Even something like weather prediction, right?
We can only predict the weather after three or four weeks consistently.
because we don't have the computers that can model it out three, four, five years.
And the weather is a closed system.
We have, you know, sun coming in, but you should be, I mean, you know, technically, you should be able to figure out the weather for the next 50 years.
You should be able to tell what's going to happen.
A hurricane is going to have five years from now, but our computers are too slow.
So quantum computers unlock that speed.
So now we can predict five years out where a hurricane is going to be, where this is going to happen.
And we can do weather.
It helps with food production.
It helps with planning for events, planning for society.
I mean, a lot of things are going to change.
But what I don't think people realize is that it also opens up medical innovation.
It opens up life extension.
That's a big one that I really think is going to happen in our lifetimes if you're under, let's say if you're under 50.
It's going to happen in your lifetime where...
quantum computing along with AI will figure out ways to extend life, maybe indefinitely.
And it could be a virtual presence or it could be just, you know, the ability to upgrade your body to a point where you never would die.
You know, the universe has to contract.
But I mean, other than the universe, you know, you would live forever.
So that's going to bring up a lot of problems in society about death, the right to live, right to die, who gets to live, you know, religious questions like, is it right to live forever?
When people choose to die, is it a religious answer or a social answer?
Too many people on Earth do we have to expand out?
Just that one thing will change everything because overpopulation will be forced to move to another planet, Mars, for example.
So, you know, I think that that's something that people aren't looking, aren't talking about enough.
And the other thing is that I think in the next, I say 10 years, there's going to be emergence of what I call telechron.
And telecrime is something that a lot of people are talking about.
And what I mean by that is that you can talk about robotics.
We talk about Tesla robots walking around.
Now, every technology we've had in the last 30, 20 years has been used for crime.
Now, the opportunity there is somebody from India could, for example, hack a robot or just take one over or just send it in a box, right?
And the box gets here, robot comes out of the box and robs a bank.
Now, who do we blame for that?
Is it the person in India?
Which that's international crime.
Do we blame the manufacturer for allowing it?
So it opens up a whole new world of law and insurance that we haven't seen before.
Like if you have a Tesla robot and it malfunctions and something bad happens, who's in trouble?
Who gets in trouble for that?
Is it me the owner?
Is it Tesla the manufacturer?
Or is the robot?
It's no fault.
And who pays it?
that's insurance now we need new insurance products now we need new laws a lot of things are going to change in the next let's say 20 or 50 years because these are questions that society hasn't had to answer yet i remember seeing that question even when tesla's been developing fsd was that if you're if the tesla has to decide between like hitting a kid in the street that's just jumped out or driving your car off the road, killing you, what's the choice it makes, right?
And that's what you're kind of predicting, especially once we have robotics and higher intelligence, like what choices will it make and who will be at fault for those choices?
Because you can't really put the robot in jail.
I mean, you could, but it's not quite the same liability.
So that'll significantly change how we see that.
I want to add to that question because I do believe in the next 20 years robots will...
at minimal, be able to simulate consciousness.
And now the thing about consciousness is that you can't really prove it.
Like, I don't know if you're conscious, maybe you're an NPC, maybe I'm an NPC.
You don't know.
You can see consciousness from how I act, how I speak, how I present myself, and you assume that I'm conscious, right?
Now, if a robot can replicate that.
You know, maybe it's constant, maybe it's not, but that's going to cause people to fight for robotic rights, maybe blame robots for things.
It's going to be a division in society for a while as we try to figure out all these questions.

Let's go back to investing because I feel like this is something where you're giving us a great preview of things to come.
And on our show and at Milkrow in general, we're always looking at ways to how can we invest in these trends, right?
Whether you believe in it short term or you believe in it long term.
A lot of people, like I said, potentially on the sidelines of the current stuff that's going on with AI, but also hearing that that trade isn't over and that this is just the start of this entire build out.
And great to hear from you, obviously, that crypto is a big part of that.
Maybe before we get into specific things that you believe in, and again, not investment advice for anybody listening, as you know, what's something that, you know, you've been in the crypto circle since 2011.
You've seen crypto go up and down.
You clearly study the economy as well.
What are some general, like, what are your general, like, investment philosophies or the ways that you view how you communicate to investors in terms of how they should approach markets like this?
Especially right now, Armando, it's not the context.
It's like, s p keeps knocking on the door breaking new all-time highs all the time we know these things are being pumped and just totally juiced how do we approach a market like this yeah i mean uh the re it's it's an interesting question because i don't think that the market's in a true bubble because if you go let's say everybody compares to the dot-com bubble now if you look at the dot-com bubble uh most of that was was propped up by companies that had I mean, no revenue at all.
They just had some companies only had three or four people and a computer and they'd had a website, you know, and that's it.
And they raised billions of dollars and they were able to go public.
But we haven't seen that much with the AI build.
I think AI is like an infrastructure build out, which we don't really have.
The closest comparison we have is by electricity or the railroads.
And we compare it a lot to the dotcom boom, which is I don't think is a fair comparison.
I think it's more.
compared to the bigger build, even bigger than that, because it's a worldwide build out that requires several layers of infrastructure.
So there could be a retraction because a lot of the SP file right now is hype.
Now, hype can get burst, but to have a true bubble burst all the way down 70, 80 percent, like we've seen with a lot of dot com companies back then, I don't think that's going to happen.
I think that we're misunderstanding what we're seeing.
uh the average person which is concerning to me is that the average i say i would say 70 of people they understand ai to be chat gpt and clawed that's what they if you say what's a i collect beach abt that's not that's a that's a one application of ai that's very small the ai the whole prince uh the whole you know industry of ai is a lot bigger way bigger you know predictive analytics uh we have you know uh decision making at a very high levels of finance it extends over all across all of civilization uh and that's what i think people don't that's what the misunderstanding is of of ai just being some kind of hype bubble or being a true bubble uh and like i said i think it could be a retraction because of the hype but i don't think it's i think that would be probably short-lived and it will continue to build out i don't think we're going to see like in the dot-com but everything crashed for literally like seven eight years some of the things didn't come back for 10 years we won't see that with ai uh because of the uh the type of build out of this right yeah but people should uh back to your original question i'm sorry people should invest in uh the the foundations of ai uh and that's power that's compute data and energy okay and then so then where does crypto fit into that so crypto fits in because uh it is a it's a form of data uh first and second of all is that uh that we don't, if we move to a completely digital existence, which I think will happen, I think that every company on the SP500 will be related to compute data energy some type of way, even SpaceX really is.
So if we're in that type of world, then crypto fits right into it.
That's what we're going to transact in, that's what stores of data is going to be paid for in, and compute will be paid for.
And now Sam Altman talks about a future in which compute intelligence will be uh turn you'll be able to turn it on and off like a light bulb right let's say for example i need intelligence today so i turn it on in my my whole house or whatever we use it for maybe even businesses they consume it like electricity and pay uh meter uh payments i think those payments are going to be in blockchain some kind of you know cryptocurrency bitcoin ethereum maybe even something we uh haven't heard of yet but uh it just makes sense for crypto to be the currency of that age okay Now, I have a specific question for you, Armando.
You've written a book about the next 50 years.
If you had to pick Bitcoin or SpaceX, what would you choose?
I'd pick Bitcoin.
SpaceX is already valued very high now.
But SpaceX… They're almost the same.
They're almost the same market cap.
That's the thing.
That's been the joke, at least in the crypto circles, that SpaceX debuts at the same cap as Bitcoin.
But continue, please.
I mean, SpaceX, over 50 years from… Remember, SpaceX is the first… the first company I've ever seen as a civilization level company.
And now, right now they're putting satellites in this orbit and things like that.
Remember, they're trying to go to Mars and Mars is a huge opportunity, especially with the population increase, everything we're talking about now.
If SpaceX is able to get to Mars, now who owns Mars?
Technically they do.
And then secondly, is that like, if maybe the countries get together and say, well, you can't own Mars, who's going to enforce it?
There's nobody that can get to Mars 1040.
So if you can't, we know from U.S.
history that if we have a group of people that come and get land and they live a life, they don't like when a foreign entity tells them how to live their life.
And that's how America got founded, more or less.
So over a long period of time, they won't listen to Earth.
They'll have their own ways and they'll claim independence.
So maybe it'll be SpaceX.
And I don't know what it'll be in the future, but SpaceX will have all the opportunity.
That's trillions and trillions and trillions of dollars worth of value down the line.
So, yeah, I think SpaceX could absolutely do a lot better over our lifetime.
But Bitcoin also can do that or even better because as SpaceX is doing all this stuff, it increases the addressable market for crypto.
So Bitcoin will rise alongside of that.
Would you go?
would you go to mars no uh they probably won't let people my age go because it wouldn't make sense but i think i think a lot of the plans uh not just elon musk other people say you have to send somebody under 40 because it's like a two-year journey and then you have to leave your life there so it wouldn't make it wouldn't be cost effective to send somebody that was over 40 45.
but i would go if it wasn't if i was i was younger uh i think it would be a great adventure right uh I want to take a minute at the end to to to actually talk about your book because you kind of give us a preview of what's in there.
But maybe tell us a few more of the details and where people can find it.

how things used to be and how that applies to what's happening today.
The second act is about the power triad in which I talk about how all these technologies will converge and how people will invest and build wealth based on where things are going.
The third act is about the future, where things are going in the next 10, 20, 30 years.
So first act talks about how society is going to change the first 10 years.
And the second one talks about the 20, 25 years out.
The last one talks about 50 years past, in the past 50 years, how things are going to change past a lot of our lifetimes and how wealth can be built along those changes.
